Blackjack Guide: Rules, Strategy and Odds

Blackjack is the casino table game where player decisions matter most. Played with basic strategy at a table paying 3:2 with the dealer standing on soft 17, the house edge is roughly 0.4%–0.6%, lower than baccarat (1.06% on Banker) and European roulette (2.70%). Played by feel, or at a 6:5 table, the same game can cost several times more. This section explains the rules, the strategy and the numbers behind each decision, from card values to card counting. It is part of our casino game guides.

Start Here: Rules and Strategy

  • Blackjack rules — card values, how a hand is dealt, player options, payouts and the table rules that change the house edge.
  • Basic strategy chart — the full hard, soft and pair tables for 4–8 deck games, with the changes for H17 and other rules.
  • Dealer rules and bust odds — the dealer’s fixed procedure and the probability of every final dealer total for each upcard.
  • Odds and house edge — the cost of each rule from 6:5 payouts to surrender, and the house edge of common tables in A$ terms.

Individual Decisions

  • Doubling down — when to double hard and soft totals, the card odds behind 9, 10 and 11, and doubling restrictions.
  • Splitting pairs — the pair chart with reasons, why Aces and 8s are split and 10s and 5s are not.
  • Soft hands — how to play soft 13 to soft 20, including the frequently misplayed soft 18.
  • Insurance and even money — why insurance costs about 7.4% per unit without counting, and when a counter takes it.

Game Formats and Variants

  • European vs American blackjack — hole card versus no hole card, what dealer blackjack can take from you, and the strategy changes.
  • Blackjack variants — Spanish 21, Pontoon, Switch, Double Exposure, Free Bet, Infinite and Lightning blackjack compared.
  • Live blackjack — studio rules, seated vs Bet Behind vs shared-hand tables, limits and hourly cost.
  • Side bets — exact house edges for 21+3, Perfect Pairs and insurance, and what they add to a session.

Advanced and Avoiding Errors

  • Card counting — the Hi-Lo system, true count, index plays and why counting fails in RNG games.
  • Common mistakes — 12 table-selection, playing and money errors, with the cost of each.

Four Rules That Cover Most of the Value

  1. Only play 3:2 tables. A 6:5 payout adds 1.39% to the house edge, more than every other common rule combined.
  2. Prefer S17 tables with double after split. Dealer hitting soft 17 adds 0.22%; no double after split adds 0.14%.
  3. Use the chart for every hand. Typical intuitive play costs 2% or more; basic strategy brings a standard game to about 0.5%.
  4. Decline insurance and side bets. Insurance costs about 7.4% per unit in 6 decks; 21+3 costs 3.70% and Perfect Pairs 4.10% at 8 decks.

Practising Without Risk

Most RNG blackjack games have a demo mode. Playing a few hundred hands with the chart open is the quickest way to make decisions automatic; see demo play. When you move to real money, set a session budget and use the casino’s limit tools (setting limits). Blackjack’s low edge also makes it a common exclusion in bonus terms: most casinos count it at 0%–10% towards wagering (game weighting).

Related Game Guides

Players who like low-edge table games also compare baccarat, where the Banker bet costs 1.06%, and roulette, where French tables with La Partage cost 1.35% on even-money bets. Casino poker games such as video poker and table poker also reward correct strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

About 0.4%–0.6% with basic strategy at a multi-deck table paying 3:2 where the dealer stands on soft 17. Poorer rules such as 6:5 payouts or H17 raise it.

Not with basic strategy alone; it minimises the house edge but does not remove it. Card counting can create a small player edge in dealt shoes, but not in RNG games that reshuffle every round.

Australian-licensed operators cannot offer online casino games, including blackjack, under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Offshore sites accept Australians but are not licensed here.

The blackjack payout. Choose 3:2 tables; 6:5 adds about 1.39% to the house edge.

The maths is similar for the same rules. Live tables are slower, so they cost less per hour at the same stake; RNG games usually offer demo play and lower minimums.
