Baccarat Guide: Rules, Odds and Formats
Baccarat is a two-hand card game in which you bet on Player, Banker or a Tie. There are no playing decisions: both hands are dealt by fixed third-card rules, so the only choices are the bet, the stake, the table and the session length. The maths is fixed and well known. In an 8-deck shoe, Banker wins 45.86% of hands, Player 44.62% and Tie 9.52%. After the 5% commission on Banker wins, the Banker bet carries a 1.06% house edge, Player 1.24% and Tie 14.36% at 8:1. This section explains the rules, the numbers and the formats offered online. It is part of our casino game guides.

Where to Play Baccarat Online
The casinos below accept Australian players and, according to our reviews, run live casino sections with tables from studios such as Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live or Ezugi, where standard, speed and squeeze baccarat tables are usually found. Check whether a table is commission or no-commission before betting Banker.
More options are compared on our baccarat sites list. These are offshore operators: offering real-money online casino games to people in Australia is prohibited under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. See our summary of the Interactive Gambling Act.

Why Banker Is the Default Bet
Banker acts second. When the Player draws a third card, the Banker’s drawing rule takes that card into account, which is why Banker wins more often (50.68% of hands that are not ties). Without commission, Banker would carry a player advantage of about 1.24%; the 5% commission turns that into a 1.06% house edge. Player has no commission but a slightly higher 1.24% edge. The difference is A$1.80 per A$1,000 staked. Tie bets look attractive at 8:1 but a fair payout would be about 9.5:1.
What Baccarat Costs per Hour
| Format | Assumed hands per hour | A$20 on Banker | Expected loss/hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squeeze | 40 | A$800 staked | A$8.48 |
| Standard live | 60 | A$1,200 staked | A$12.72 |
| Speed | 120 | A$2,400 staked | A$25.44 |
Pace changes the hourly cost, not the odds. Faster tables call for smaller stakes or shorter sessions; tools for this are covered in setting limits and reality checks.
Common Questions Before Playing
- Do I need to learn the third-card rules? No; the dealer or software applies them. Knowing them helps you follow the hand.
- Do scoreboards (roads) help? They record past results and do not change the next hand’s probabilities; see gambler’s fallacy.
- Is baccarat allowed with a bonus? Often not, or only at 0%–10% contribution; some terms ban betting both sides. See game weighting.
