ELK Studios Slots: X-iter, Games and Features

ELK Studios is a Stockholm slot developer founded in 2013 and owned by Light & Wonder (formerly Scientific Games) since December 2021. It is known for the X-iter feature-entry menu, the Nitropolis series and Cygnus. It holds UK, Malta and Romania licences. ELK’s official demo launcher shows “You are not allowed to play in this region” to Australian visitors.

ELK Studios at a Glance

ELK Studios was established in Stockholm in 2013 with a stated focus on a small number of releases, each combining a distinct mechanic with in-house artwork. Its maths models are built with statistical modelling and cloud-based simulation. Scientific Games, now called Light & Wonder, completed its acquisition of ELK on 1 December 2021; terms were not disclosed. ELK games had already been distributed through Scientific Games’ OpenGaming platform under an earlier partnership, and the studio continues to develop independently.

Signature Features

X-iter

X-iter, introduced in 2021, is ELK’s version of a bonus buy. Instead of a single “buy bonus” button, each game offers up to five modes, each priced as a multiple of the base bet. Modes can guarantee a base-game feature on every spin, run spins with growing win multipliers, or start directly in one of several bonus games. X-iter won Game Innovation of the Year at the 2021 5 Star Starlet Awards. As with any buy feature, paying for direct entry changes how the return is distributed, not the long-run expected loss; the bonus buy guide explains the maths. X-iter is switched off in jurisdictions that prohibit bonus buys, including the UK.

Betting strategies

ELK games include automated betting strategies that change the stake between spins according to a preset pattern chosen by the player. They are a stake-management tool only: no betting pattern changes a slot’s RTP, as our guide to betting systems explains.

Series and themes

ELK builds recurring series rather than many one-off titles. Nitropolis, first released in 2020, became a long-running series on large grids; Wild Toro has a sequel (Wild Toro II); Cygnus and Katmandu are other titles named in the 2021 acquisition announcement.

Maths Profile

ELK slots are built around one main feature per game, so much of the return depends on how often that feature lands and how far it develops. RTP and volatility are published per game in the rules screen and, as with most suppliers, more than one configuration can exist. Offshore casinos are free to choose which version to install, so read the RTP line in the game’s help screen before staking real money; the RTP check walkthrough shows where to find it. Because X-iter modes have their own price and maths, check the mode description too: a mode that guarantees a feature every spin costs several times the base bet per spin.

Pricing an X-iter Mode

X-iter modes are priced per spin or per entry as a multiple of the base bet, and the price is shown before you confirm. Two kinds of mode behave differently. A per-spin mode (for example, a guaranteed feature on every spin) multiplies the cost of each spin, so a session budget runs down several times faster than in normal play. A direct-entry mode charges once for a bonus game, which concentrates the budget into one result. In both cases, compare the price with your total session budget before using it: at a A$0.50 base bet, a 100x entry costs A$50. Many casino bonuses exclude feature buys from wagering or void winnings from them; read the bonus terms first.

Demo Play from Australia

ELK’s website lists a “Play” demo for each game, served from its content launcher. When we opened it from an Australian connection in October 2026, the launcher returned the message “You are not allowed to play in this region. Please contact support.” Australian visitors therefore cannot use the official ELK demos, and we do not embed them. Some casinos run their own demo mode, depending on the casino and region.

Availability at Casinos for Australians

5 offshore casinos reviewed on BetsAuthority list ELK Studios: Level Up, Neospin, Lucky7even, Cosmobet and MrPunter. Light & Wonder is also a major supplier of land-based gaming machines in Australia, which is a separate, state-regulated business; online casino games remain prohibited for Australian residents under the Interactive Gambling Act, and the casinos above operate offshore. Lobbies change, so confirm ELK titles are available before you deposit. The current list is on the ELK Studios casinos page.

How ELK Compares

ELK and Thunderkick are both Stockholm studios founded in the same period, but they differ in approach: Thunderkick keeps many games at low volatility with simple features, while ELK concentrates on feature-heavy games with paid entry through X-iter. Against Hacksaw Gaming, whose bonus buys are a short list of fixed features, X-iter offers more modes per game.
