Craps Bets and Odds

A craps table offers more than 40 different wagers, and their house edges range from 0% to 16.67%. This page lists each common bet with its payout, the true odds and the resulting house edge, using the 36 two-dice combinations explained in our craps rules guide. Where a bet’s terms vary between tables, both common versions are shown.

“Multi-roll” bets stay up until they win or lose; “one roll” bets are decided by the next roll. Payouts quoted as “to 1” exclude the returned stake. Some online games quote “for 1”, which includes the stake: 30 for 1 equals 29 to 1, a significantly worse bet than 30 to 1.

Line Bets

Pass Line (1.41%) and Come (1.41%) win on 7 or 11 on their first roll, lose on 2, 3 or 12, and otherwise need the point to repeat before a 7.

Don’t Pass (1.36%) and Don’t Come (1.36%) are the reverse, with 12 (or 2 on some tables) a push. Once a point is set, a Don’t bet is the favourite: on a point of 4, it wins two times out of three. That is why casinos let you remove a Don’t bet after the point but not a Pass bet.

Odds Bets: The Only 0% Bet

The odds bet pays true odds, so it has no house edge. Adding odds lowers the overall edge of your combined Pass + Odds money.

The house edge per A$ bet falls, but the amount at risk rises. A A$10 Pass bet with 5x odds on a 6 puts A$60 on the table. The expected loss per round stays at about A$0.14 (1.41% of the A$10 line bet), while the swings grow.

Lay odds on Don’t bets pay 1 to 2 (4/10), 2 to 3 (5/9) and 5 to 6 (6/8), also with 0% edge.

Place, Buy and Lay Bets

Place bets win if their number rolls before a 7. They pay less than true odds:

NumberTrue oddsPlace paysHouse edgeBuy (5% on wins)
4 or 102 to 19 to 56.67%1.67%
5 or 93 to 27 to 54.00%2.00%
6 or 86 to 57 to 61.52%2.27%

Buy bets pay true odds minus a commission of 5% of the bet. When the commission is charged only on wins, buying the 4 or 10 (1.67%) is far better than placing them (6.67%). When the commission is charged up front, the edge on a buy bet rises to 4.76% for every number. For 6 and 8, placing (1.52%) is always cheaper than buying.

Lay bets are the opposite of buy bets: you win if a 7 rolls before the number, at true odds less a commission of 5% of the amount you stand to win. With the commission paid up front, the edges are 2.44% on 4/10, 3.23% on 5/9 and 4.00% on 6/8. Where it is charged only on winning lays, they fall to 1.67%, 2.00% and 2.27%.

Place bet units: place bets on 6 and 8 should be in multiples of A$6, and on 5/9 and 4/10 in multiples of A$5, so the 7-to-6 and 7-to-5 or 9-to-5 payouts are paid in full.

Field and Big 6/8

The Field is a one-roll bet on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. Those numbers cover 16 of the 36 combinations; 5, 6, 7 and 8 (20 combinations) lose. The 2 and 12 pay extra:

  • 2 and 12 pay 2 to 1: house edge 5.56%.
  • One of them pays 3 to 1: house edge 2.78%.

Big 6 and Big 8 pay 1 to 1 if the number rolls before a 7. Place 6 or 8 covers exactly the same result and pays 7 to 6, so Big 6/8 (9.09%) should never be chosen over a place bet (1.52%).

Hardways

A hardway wins if the number is rolled as a pair (for example 3-3 for hard 6) before a 7 or the “easy” version of that number.

Because these are decided every roll, their cost adds up quickly. A A$5 Any 7 bet every roll costs A$83 per 100 rolls on average, against about A$2.80 for A$6 placed on the 6 or 8 over the same number of rolls.

Comparing Bets by Cost per Roll

House edge per bet hides how often a bet is decided. A place bet on 6 resolves only on a 6 or 7 (11 of 36 rolls), so its edge per roll is lower than its edge per decision. The table shows expected loss per 100 rolls with A$10 in action:

Bet (A$10)Expected loss per 100 rolls

Pass Line (no odds)About A$4.20
Field (2.78% version)About A$27.80
Field (5.56% version)About A$55.60
Any 7About A$166.70

Use these figures to set a session budget. Our craps strategy page turns them into a betting plan, and the general principle is explained in house edge explained.

Live and RNG craps games use the same payouts as above unless the help screen states otherwise; check the Field and the “to 1/for 1” wording first. Live Craps is part of Evolution’s catalogue, available at casinos such as MrPunter; see casinos with Evolution games for more options. For other dice games with fixed payouts, compare sic bo.
