Baccarat Strategy: What Changes Your Results and What Doesn’t
Baccarat strategy is short, because the game has no playing decisions: the cards are dealt by fixed third-card rules. You choose only what to bet on, how much, at which table and for how long. Those choices determine your long-run cost precisely, and the numbers are known: Banker 1.06%, Player 1.24%, Tie 14.36% at 8:1. Everything else sold as “baccarat strategy” (road reading, pattern following, betting progressions) changes the pattern of results but not their expected value. This page covers both. It is part of our baccarat guide.
Decision 1: Which Bet
| Bet | House edge (8 decks) | Expected loss per A$1,000 staked |
|---|---|---|
| Banker (5% commission) | 1.06% | A$10.60 |
| Player | 1.24% | A$12.40 |
| Banker, no-commission table | 1.46% | A$14.60 |
| Tie at 9:1 | 4.84% | A$48.40 |
| Player/Banker Pair (11:1) | 10.36% | A$103.60 |
| Tie at 8:1 | 14.36% | A$143.60 |
Banker is the lowest-cost bet in standard baccarat. The 5% commission is already included in the 1.06%: without it the Banker bet would have a player advantage, which is why casinos charge it. Player is a close second and has no commission, which some players prefer for simplicity. Full calculations: baccarat odds and house edge.
Decision 2: Which Table
- Commission table over no-commission. The no-commission format pays only half on Banker wins with a total of 6, raising the Banker edge to 1.46%. Player bets are unaffected (1.24%) on both formats.
- Tie payout. If you ever bet Tie, a 9:1 table (4.84%) is far cheaper than 8:1 (14.36%).
- Multiplier tables charge a fee or reduce base payouts in exchange for random multipliers; check the stated RTP in the help screen.

Decision 3: Pace and Stake
The hourly cost of baccarat is stake × hands per hour × edge. A fast table at the same stake costs more per hour:
| Table | Assumed hands/hour | A$25 Banker | Expected loss per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squeeze baccarat | 40 | A$1,000 staked | A$10.60 |
| Standard live | 60 | A$1,500 staked | A$15.90 |
| Speed baccarat | 120 | A$3,000 staked | A$31.80 |
Pace affects cost, not odds. If you move to a faster format, lower the stake or shorten the session. Formats are described on speed baccarat and squeeze baccarat.
Decision 4: Side Bets
Every common side bet costs several times more than the main bets: Pair 10.36%, Either Pair 13.71%, Dragon Bonus on Banker 9.37%. Dragon Bonus on Player (2.65%) is the lowest of the group and is still more than twice the Banker edge. See baccarat side bets.
How Likely Is a Winning Session?
Because the Banker edge is small, short sessions are mostly luck. The longer you play, the more the edge shows. Approximate chance of being ahead when flat betting Banker (normal approximation; standard deviation about 0.93 units per hand):
| Hands played | Expected result (units) | Chance of finishing ahead |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | −1.1 | about 45% |
| 1,000 | −10.6 | about 36% |
| 10,000 | −106 | about 13% |
At A$10 per unit, 1,000 hands is an expected loss of about A$106, with a typical spread of roughly ±A$290 around that figure. This is why stop points matter more in baccarat than “systems”: the session’s result depends mainly on when you stop, and the expected cost depends only on how much you stake in total.
What Doesn’t Work
Road reading and pattern betting
Live tables display the Big Road, Bead Plate and derived roads. Following “dragons” (long streaks) or “chops” (alternating results) is popular, but each hand is dealt from the remaining shoe by fixed rules. Past Player/Banker outcomes do not shift the next hand’s probabilities in any usable way. A streak of six Banker wins happens in about 1.7% of six-hand runs (counting only resolved hands), which over a shoe of roughly 80 hands is common. See gambler’s fallacy.
Progressions
| System | Rule | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Martingale | Double after a loss | Many small wins, rare large loss at the table limit |
| Paroli | Double after a win | Many small losses, occasional run |
| 1-3-2-6 | Fixed sequence after wins | Limits losses per sequence; same edge |
| Flat betting | Same stake each hand | Lowest variance for the same edge |
None of these changes the 1.06% or 1.24% house edge. With Banker bets, the 5% commission also complicates progressions: a Martingale on Banker needs slightly more than doubling to recover losses. General analysis: betting systems.
Card counting
Card removal affects baccarat’s main bets very little. Advantage situations arise rarely and late in the shoe, and live tables usually stop dealing well before the end. RNG baccarat reshuffles each round.
A Simple Baccarat Plan
- Pick a commission table with a 9:1 tie payout if available (you still should not bet Tie).
- Bet Banker (or Player if you prefer no commission) with flat stakes.
- Size stakes at 1%–2% of the session budget. A A$500 session budget suggests A$5–A$10 per hand.
- Skip side bets.
- Set a time limit, especially on speed tables.
- Use casino deposit and loss limits (setting limits).
Baccarat and Bonuses
Baccarat is low-edge and close to a coin flip, so many casinos exclude it from bonus wagering, count it at 0%–10%, or ban betting Player and Banker on the same hand. Some terms also prohibit low-risk patterns. Read game weighting before using bonus funds. Casinos with baccarat tables are compared on our baccarat sites list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bet Banker with flat stakes at a standard commission table and avoid the Tie and side bets. That keeps the house edge at 1.06%, the lowest available on the main bets.
No. Scoreboard patterns record past results; they do not change the probabilities of the next hand.
Player has a slightly higher edge (1.24% vs 1.06%), so Banker is cheaper even after commission. The difference is A$1.80 per A$1,000 staked.
In theory, but the gains are very small and rare, and live tables usually cut the shoe early. It is not practical.
For Banker bets, no: the edge rises to 1.46% because Banker wins on 6 pay half. For Player bets there is no difference.
