PayPal at Online Casinos in Australia

Short answer: PayPal does not work at offshore online casinos for Australians. None of the casinos reviewed on BetsAuthority lists PayPal for deposits or withdrawals, and PayPal’s own rules make that unlikely to change. This page explains why, what to do if a site claims to take PayPal, where Australians can legally use PayPal for gambling, and which e-wallets offshore casinos actually use instead.

Why PayPal Isn’t Offered

PayPal treats gambling as a restricted activity. Its Acceptable Use Policy and help pages set out three conditions:

  1. Gambling payments require PayPal’s prior written approval of the merchant.
  2. The operator and its customers must be located only in jurisdictions where the activity is legal.
  3. Approved merchants must show they can block customers in jurisdictions where the gambling is illegal.

Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, offering real-money online casino games and pokies to people in Australia is prohibited, and the ACMA blocks offshore sites that do it. An offshore casino serving Australians therefore can’t meet PayPal’s conditions for Australian customers. That is why PayPal is absent from every cashier we review, including casinos that support 15 or more other methods.

E-Wallet Alternatives at Offshore Casinos

The table below is not a list of PayPal casinos. It shows reviewed casinos that list the e-wallets most often used in place of PayPal: Skrill, Neteller and MiFinity, all of which they also list for withdrawals.

Skrill and Neteller (both Paysafe brands) and MiFinity permit gambling transactions with merchants they accept, which is why offshore casinos use them. They charge their own fees for loading money, currency conversion and withdrawing to a bank, so read each provider’s fee page before choosing. MiFinity is listed for payouts by 25 of the casinos we review.

If a Casino Says It Accepts PayPal

Occasionally a site aimed at Australians shows a PayPal logo. Treat that as a warning sign rather than a feature:

  • Disguised merchant. The payment may be routed through a business that describes itself to PayPal as something other than gambling. That breaches PayPal’s rules and can lead PayPal to limit your account or hold funds.
  • No payouts. Even if a deposit works, a withdrawal to PayPal usually isn’t available, so winnings must go by another method after full verification.
  • No protection. PayPal’s buyer protection is designed for purchases of goods and services, not gambling, and a payment to a mislabelled merchant gives you weak grounds for a dispute.
  • Logo only. Some sites display payment logos they don’t support at all. Check the logged-in cashier, not the footer.

Our checklist for spotting a scam casino lists other signs, such as missing licence details and unrealistic bonus terms.

Where Australians Can Use PayPal for Gambling

Some Australian-licensed bookmakers (sports and race wagering) offer PayPal, because their activity is legal and licensed in Australia. These operators can’t offer online casino games or pokies. Since 11 June 2024, licensed online wagering providers have also been banned from accepting credit cards and credit-related products, so a PayPal payment to a bookmaker must be funded from a bank account or debit card rather than credit. Lotteries and some land-based venues have their own payment rules. For the legal picture, see is online gambling legal in Australia.

Choosing an E-Wallet Instead of PayPal

  1. Check both directions. Pick a wallet the casino lists for deposits and withdrawals. In our data, Skrill and MiFinity are listed for payouts at almost every casino that accepts them.
  2. Read the wallet’s fee page. Loading by card, converting AUD to EUR and withdrawing to an Australian bank account can each carry a fee. Some casinos’ welcome bonuses exclude Skrill and Neteller deposits, so check the promotion terms as well.
  3. Verify early. E-wallets run their own ID checks. An unverified wallet may have low limits, and the casino will also verify you before paying out.
  4. Use one name everywhere. The wallet, bank account and casino account must all be in the same name, or withdrawals are returned.

Document requirements on the casino side are explained in our KYC verification guide.

If the reason you wanted PayPal was speed of withdrawals, e-wallets and crypto are usually processed faster than cards or bank transfers; see fast withdrawal options. If it was to keep card details private, Neosurf vouchers or Apple Pay achieve that for deposits. All methods are compared on the casino payments hub, and casinos supporting Skrill are ranked on our Skrill casinos page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at offshore casinos. PayPal only processes gambling for approved merchants operating where the activity is legal, and online casino games can’t legally be offered to people in Australia. None of the casinos we review lists PayPal.

Treat it with caution. The payment may go through a merchant that hides the gambling purpose, which breaches PayPal’s rules and can lead PayPal to limit your account. Withdrawals to PayPal are usually not available either.

E-wallets: Skrill and Neteller are listed by 31 of the casinos we review, and MiFinity by 27. Most of those casinos also pay out to them.

Some Australian-licensed bookmakers offer PayPal for sports and race betting. They can’t offer online casino games, and since 11 June 2024 they can’t accept credit cards or credit-related products.

Don’t count on it. PayPal’s buyer protection is designed for goods and services, and a payment to a mislabelled merchant gives weak grounds for a claim.
