NYX Gaming Group: Games, History and What Replaced It

NYX Gaming Group was a casino software supplier and aggregator that owned NextGen Gaming (Foxin’ Wins, Spinata Grande) and OpenBet. Scientific Games bought it in January 2018 for about C$775 million (US$631 million). The NYX brand no longer exists. Its games and platform became part of SG Digital, which has traded as Light & Wonder since 2022.

What NYX was

NYX Gaming Group Limited was a gaming technology company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange. Between 2014 and 2017 it was best known for three things:

  • NYX OGS (Open Gaming System). An aggregation platform that let casinos connect NYX’s own games and those of partner studios through one integration. In its time it was one of the larger content hubs in regulated European markets.
  • NextGen Gaming. An Australian-founded slot studio that NYX acquired in 2014. It brought titles such as Foxin’ Wins, Spinata Grande, Medusa and Jackpot Jester 50,000.
  • OpenBet. A UK sportsbook platform NYX bought in 2016. It ran sports betting for several large European bookmakers.

In September 2017, Scientific Games agreed to buy NYX for C$2.40 per share, an enterprise value of about C$775 million (US$631 million). 99.83% of the shareholders who voted approved the deal, which completed on 5 January 2018. NYX shares were delisted shortly afterwards.

Why casinos still list “NYX”

Many casino databases, including the provider filters on review sites, were built when NYX OGS supplied a large share of slot content. Games delivered through NYX were tagged “NYX” regardless of which studio made them. A slot labelled NYX at an older casino could therefore be a NextGen game, a game by a partner studio on OGS, or a Scientific Games title. Today the same games are delivered by Light & Wonder under their own studio names.

NextGen Gaming: the NYX slots players remember

Most of what players associate with NYX came from NextGen Gaming. The studio was founded in Australia, and many of its games used Australian-style features from pub and club machines: stacked symbols, free spins with retriggers and big multipliers.

Slot Studio Known for
Foxin’ Wins NextGen Gaming Fox-themed free spins with multipliers; spawned several sequels
Spinata Grande NextGen Gaming Mexican-fiesta theme with giant symbols on a separate reel set
Medusa NextGen Gaming Greek mythology series with free spins; several sequels
Jackpot Jester 50,000 NextGen Gaming Fruit-style game named after its top fixed win
Merlin’s Millions Superbet NextGen Gaming Superbet side stake that raised the feature trigger rate

RTP and volatility

NextGen and NYX-era slots were usually supplied with RTPs in the mid-90s. Several titles were later re-certified by Scientific Games and Light & Wonder in more than one configuration. Many of these games are now 8–12 years old, and the version a casino runs may differ from what older reviews quote. Check the info screen in the game itself; our RTP check guide shows how. Foxin’ Wins and Spinata Grande are medium-to-high volatility, with most of the return in free spins. See volatility explained.

Where the games are now

After the 2018 takeover, NYX OGS became part of SG Digital’s distribution, and NextGen titles moved into the Scientific Games catalogue. When Scientific Games renamed itself Light & Wonder in 2022, these games moved with it. Light & Wonder focuses on regulated markets such as the UK, Europe and North America. Its games are therefore less common at offshore casinos that accept Australians, and demos are often unavailable from Australian IP addresses because of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. See offshore casinos and Australians and our demo play guide.

How to find a former NYX game today

  • Search by title, not by provider. Lobbies now file NextGen titles under Light & Wonder, SG Digital or NextGen, never under NYX.
  • Check the version. Re-certified versions may have a different RTP or maximum bet than the original. The info screen shows the current values.
  • Expect gaps in Australia. Light & Wonder content is supplied mainly to regulated markets, so many offshore casinos that accept Australians do not carry it.
  • Avoid copies. A game called “Foxin’ Wins” on an unknown casino that does not credit Light & Wonder or NextGen may be an unlicensed copy with unknown maths. Our guide to spotting a scam casino covers the warning signs.

None of the casinos currently reviewed on this site lists NYX as a provider. If you are looking for a specific former NYX game, search the casino lobby by the game’s title, not by “NYX”.
