Misery Mining

Misery Mining follows an angry dwarf on a lifelong quest underground, not for gold but for the perfect beer recipe. Released by Nolimit City in March 2022, it is the follow-up in spirit to Fire in the Hole and uses the same explosive xBomb mechanic, this time on a grid that starts at just 3×3 and can blast its way out to 7×7.

Nolimit City rates the game as Extreme volatility with a maximum payout of 70,000x the bet. This review explains the expanding mine, how xBombs and xBomb Mining work, and the choice between Mouse and Rat free spins, based on the official figures from Nolimit City’s game page.

How Misery Mining Works

The full playing field is a 7×7 grid, but at the start of each spin only the central 3×3 area is open; the rest is closed off by barriers. Wins are formed by matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, and every win triggers a collapse: winning symbols are removed and new ones fall into place. Nolimit City lists a hit frequency of 28.57%, so a little over one spin in four produces a win.

The aim within a spin is to push the barriers back. The bigger the open area, the more ways there are to win, and the further a collapse sequence can run. Each new spin starts again from the central 3×3, so progress is not carried over from one paid spin to the next. That reset is important to understand: a large grid in one spin says nothing about the next, and the game does not build towards anything between spins.

Collapsing Mine and xBomb Wilds

The xBomb Wild substitutes for every symbol except Scatters and Super Scatters. When it explodes, it removes neighbouring symbols (other than Scatters, Super Scatters and other xBombs) and increases the win multiplier by 1 for the next collapse. An xBomb that explodes next to a barrier also pushes that barrier back one step, opening more of the grid. This is Nolimit City’s xSize idea in action: features that enlarge the active area as they trigger.

xBomb Mining

xBomb Mining stops some dead spins from ending empty. If there are no wins and no xBomb Wilds on the grid, and fewer than three Scatters, any Scatters and Super Scatters in view transform into non-wild xBombs and explode. That causes a new collapse, shifts the barriers and adds 1 to the multiplier for the following collapses. A spin that looked finished can therefore restart on a larger grid with a higher multiplier.

Misery Freespins: Mouse or Rat

Misery Freespins are triggered by three Scatters, and one or two Super Scatters in the trigger enlarge the starting reel area from 3×3 to 4×4 or 5×5. You then choose a mode:

  • Mouse mode is a traditional free spins round with a fixed number of spins; review sites list 8, 10 or 12 spins depending on the trigger. It is the steadier of the two options.
  • Rat mode starts with 3 spins. Activating coin wagons or landing a Super Scatter resets the count to 3. On every spin the top row reveals enhancers such as coin wagons, multipliers, bombs, Super Scatters, a bag, a chest, the rat or the dwarf. This mode is the more volatile route to the 70,000x cap.

Bonus Buy

The Nolimit Bonus lets you buy into the free spins directly, with prices from 66x to 1,000x the base bet; the more expensive options include Super Scatters and a bigger starting grid. The feature can be removed in some regulated markets, so not every casino offers it.

RTP Versions: Check Before You Play

Nolimit City publishes an RTP of 96.09%, which is the top setting. Lower configurations are available to operators, with a version around 94.05% reported. Visuals and features are the same in every version, so check the RTP figure in the game info at your casino.

Worked Example: Growing the Mine

Say you bet A$0.50 and land a small win in the 3×3 area with an xBomb Wild next to the right-hand barrier. The win is paid, the xBomb explodes, the barrier moves out one column and the multiplier for the next collapse becomes 2x. If the new symbols form another win and a second xBomb explodes against the top barrier, the next collapse plays on a larger area at 3x. A chain like this can turn a few cents into a meaningful win, but most sequences stop after one or two steps.

Bankroll Tips for Misery Mining

  • Budget for at least 300 spins; the bonus lands about once every 220 spins on average.
  • Choose Mouse mode if you prefer steadier free spins, and Rat mode only if you can accept bigger swings.
  • Treat the 1,000x bonus buy as a high-risk purchase that can return far less than its cost.
  • Set loss and time limits and use your casino’s deposit limit tools.

Demo Play vs Real Money

Nolimit City provides a free demo on its own site with the same maths as the real game. At the time of writing, the official demo did not load from an Australian connection. If a demo is available to you, use it to compare Mouse and Rat mode before spending real money.

For real-money play, choose a casino that displays the RTP, pays out promptly and offers limit and self-exclusion tools. See our casino reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nolimit City lists the RTP at 96.09%. Casinos can run lower configurations, so check the game info before playing.

The maximum payout, called Le Grande Jaune, is 70,000x the base bet. When a round reaches it, the round ends and the cap is paid.

Each spin starts with a central 3×3 area. Exploding xBombs next to a barrier push it back one step, and the grid can grow to 7×7.

Mouse mode gives a fixed number of free spins. Rat mode starts with 3 spins that reset when coin wagons or Super Scatters land, and is the more volatile choice.

Land three Scatters, with one or two Super Scatters raising the starting grid from 3×3 to 4×4 or 5×5.

Where allowed, the Nolimit Bonus offers feature buys from 66x to 1,000x the base bet.

Responsible Gaming Note

Misery Mining is entertainment, not a way to make money. Only play if you are 18 or older, set limits before you start and stop when you reach them. If gambling stops being fun, free and confidential support is available 24/7 from Gambling Help Online on 1800 858 858.

Final Verdict

Misery Mining builds on the xBomb idea with a grid that starts small and can explode out to 7×7, plus xBomb Mining to give dead spins another chance. The choice between Mouse and Rat free spins lets you decide how much risk to take in the bonus, and the 70,000x cap gives it serious upside. It is an Extreme volatility game, though, so keep stakes small, confirm the RTP at your casino and stick to your limits.
