Gonzo’s Quest Megaways

Gonzo’s Quest Megaways takes NetEnt’s famous explorer and drops him into the Megaways engine, licensed from Big Time Gaming. Red Tiger built the game and released it in July 2020. It keeps the Avalanche reels, the rising multiplier and the Free Fall bonus from the original, then adds a changing reel height with up to 117,649 ways, unbreakable wilds and a random Earthquake that clears out the low-paying symbols.

The result is a far more volatile game than the original. Red Tiger places it at the top of its volatility scale, labelled “Insane”, and quotes a maximum payout of 20,972x the bet, nearly ten times the ceiling of the 2010 classic. This review explains how each feature works, what the official numbers mean and how to approach a slot with this level of risk.

Where to Play Gonzo’s Quest Megaways

The game is available at casinos that carry Red Tiger titles, which often sit alongside NetEnt games since both studios belong to the same group. The casinos below accept players from Australia, are reviewed on BetsAuthority and are among our top-rated sites, with Cosmobet and MrPunter listing Red Tiger in their game libraries. Game selection changes over time, so search the lobby for the title and open the game rules to confirm which RTP version is running.

How Gonzo’s Quest Megaways Works

Each of the six reels can hold a different number of symbols on every spin, up to a maximum of seven. The number of ways to win is the product of the symbol counts on each reel, so it changes every spin and peaks at 117,649 when all six reels show seven symbols. Wins form when matching symbols land on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel, in any position.

As in the original, symbols fall into place rather than spinning. Symbols in winning combinations explode and disappear, the rest drop down and new ones fall in from above. This Avalanche continues until no new wins appear, so one spin can deliver a whole sequence of wins.

The Avalanche Multiplier

Winning ways drive the multiplier. In the base game the first win raises it to x2, the second to x3 and the third to x5. Once it reaches x5 it stays there for the rest of the spin and applies to every further win in the sequence. When the spin ends, the multiplier resets.

Because the Megaways layout produces many ways at once, long Avalanche sequences are more common than in the original game, and reaching x5 on a spin with several premium ways can lead to a strong result.

Earthquake and Unbreakable Wilds

The Earthquake is a random feature. The screen begins to shake and every low-paying symbol on the reels is destroyed. In the respins that follow, only high-paying symbols can land, which makes premium wins much more likely for the rest of that sequence.

Wilds in this version do not break when they take part in a win, so they stay on the reels through the Avalanche and can contribute to several wins in a row. Only two wilds can be on the reels at the same time: one can land on reels 1 to 3 and the other on reels 4 to 6. Wilds substitute for paying symbols and for Free Fall symbols.

Free Fall Bonus

Free Fall is triggered by a win way of at least 3 Free Fall symbols, or at least 2 Free Fall symbols and a wild. Each symbol that takes part in that win way awards 3 free spins, so a larger trigger means a longer round. During Free Fall the Avalanche multiplier follows a steeper ladder: x3, x6, x9 and x15, and additional free spins can be won during the round.

One unusual detail: after the bonus ends, you return to the spin that triggered it. The Free Fall symbols that started the round are destroyed for a chance of further wins, and the multiplier from the last respin before the bonus remains in place until no more wins occur.

RTP Versions: Check Before You Play

Red Tiger lists the game at 95.77%. Studios in the Evolution group supply operators with several RTP configurations, and the reels look identical on all of them. The game rules at your casino state the RTP for that version, so check it before you start. On a game this volatile, the theoretical return only becomes meaningful over a very large number of spins, but a lower version still costs you over time.

Worked Example: A Free Fall Trigger

Say you spin at A$1 and land a win way with 3 Free Fall symbols on reels 1 to 3, plus a second Free Fall symbol on reel 2 that is also part of the way. That is 4 symbols in the win way, so you receive 12 free spins. In the bonus, the first win in each Avalanche sequence is paid at x3, the second at x6, the third at x9 and any further wins at x15.

If one free spin produces a five-step Avalanche with premium symbols, the later steps are all paid at x15. That is how the game reaches results in the thousands of times the stake, though many rounds finish with far smaller totals.

Bankroll Tips for Gonzo’s Quest Megaways

  • Plan for long dry spells. Budget for 300 spins or more and keep the stake small.
  • The 0.10 minimum stake lets you stretch a budget much further on a volatile game like this.
  • Do not chase a Free Fall by raising the stake; the trigger is no more likely after a losing run.
  • Set a firm loss limit and a time limit, and use your casino’s deposit tools.
  • Treat the 20,972x figure as a theoretical maximum, not a realistic expectation.

Demo Play vs Real Money

A demo runs the same maths as the real game and is the safest way to experience volatility at this level. At the time of writing, the free-play launcher on Red Tiger’s own site is not available to visitors from Australia, so no official demo is embedded on this page. Some licensed casinos offer a play-for-fun mode where their licence allows it.

For real money play, choose a casino that discloses the RTP in the game rules, pays verified withdrawals promptly and offers deposit and session limits. You can compare options in our casino reviews.

Final Verdict
