Wild Toro

Wild Toro is an ELK Studios slot built around a contest between a bull and a group of matadors in a Spanish town square. It runs on a 5×4 grid with 178 connecting paylines and has no free spins. Its features are respins instead: the Toro symbol lands only on reel 5 and walks left one reel per respin, while matadors block positions until Toro charges them and leaves wilds behind. Three matadors also start a separate respin feature, the Matador Respin Challenge.

The rules state a 96.4% RTP, a maximum win of 2,250x the bet and a bet range of 0.20 to 100 per spin. ELK Studios notes that the game won Game of the Year at the 2017 EGR Operator Awards. This review explains each mechanic, the coin paytable and how a Toro sequence is paid. ELK demos are not available from Australia, so no demo is embedded here; the screenshots come from ELK’s official demo.

How Wild Toro Works

Each bet is 100 coins, so at a A$1 stake one coin is worth A$0.01. Wins start on the leftmost reel and pay left to right on consecutive reels along 178 connecting paylines, which ELK displays as “178 ways to win”. Only the highest win per payline is paid.

Three symbol types matter beyond the regular paytable. The Wild Toro logo is the wild and substitutes for all symbols except Toro and Matador; lines made only of wilds pay as the highest-value symbol. The Toro bull appears only on reel 5. The Matador appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 and acts as a blocker when there is no Toro on the reels, because it is not a paying symbol and wilds cannot replace it.

Paytable

Values are in coins, where 100 coins equal the total bet. The rose is the top symbol at 200, 500 and 1,000 coins for three, four and five (2x, 5x and 10x the bet). The orange with a dagger pays 150, 200 and 300; the fan pays 100, 150 and 200. The three coin symbols pay less: gold 40, 50 and 80; silver 30, 40 and 60; bronze 20, 30 and 50.

Because the paylines connect across a 5×4 grid, a reel filled with one symbol can complete several lines at once, so screen-wide wins are much larger than single-line values suggest. In the demo session, a line of golden coins combined with a Wild Toro symbol paid 500 coins, or 5x the bet.

The Walking Toro Wild

When a Toro lands on reel 5 it becomes a walking wild. It moves one reel to the left at a time, and each step generates a free respin. Only one Toro is active at a time; it stays active until it walks off the screen, even if another Toro lands on the way.

If matadors are on the reels, the game switches to bonus mode, “Toro Goes Wild”. Toro first attacks matadors on its own reel, moving vertically, then looks right and attacks any matadors in that direction up to reel 5, and finally turns left and attacks every remaining matador. Each defeated matador is replaced by a wild. Bonus mode ends when Toro reaches reel 1 and no matadors are left, and the payout is made once all matadors have been defeated.

This is the reason matadors are not purely negative. On a normal spin they block winning lines, but when a Toro is present every matador on screen becomes a future wild.

Matador Respin Challenge

Three matador symbols on the same spin trigger the Matador Respin Challenge with 3 respins. During the challenge every matador is sticky, and each additional matador that lands adds one more respin. The respins stop either when a Toro appears on reel 5 or when the respin counter reaches zero. If Toro arrives, it enters bonus mode and charges every matador collected so far, which can fill large parts of the grid with wilds.

Two details in the rules shape how the challenge plays out. First, every new matador adds one respin, so a challenge with frequent matador hits can run well beyond its initial 3 respins. Second, the challenge stops as soon as a Toro appears, because from that point the bonus mode takes over and Toro attacks every matador on screen. The more matadors collected before Toro arrives, the more wilds the sequence produces.

Reel Roles at a Glance

  • Reel 1: regular symbols and wilds only; Toro finishes its walk here.
  • Reels 2 to 4: where matadors can land and later turn into wilds.
  • Reel 5: the only reel where Toro can land and start a sequence.
  • All reels: the Wild Toro logo can substitute for regular symbols.

RTP and Maximum Win

The rules state a theoretical RTP of 96.4% and a maximum win of 2,250x the placed bet (rules last updated 6 December 2022). The rules do not list a volatility rating. Results are driven by when Toro lands and how many matadors are on screen at the time, so the spread between ordinary spins and Toro sequences is wide.

Worked Example: A Toro Sequence

At a A$1 bet, a spin shows two matadors on reels 2 and 4 and a Toro on reel 5. Toro first checks reel 5 for matadors, finds none, then turns left. It charges the matador on reel 4 and the one on reel 2, each becoming a wild, and generates a respin for each step it takes. With wilds now in those positions, a respin that lands roses on reels 1 and 3 can complete five-of-a-kind rose lines at 1,000 coins (A$10) each, and every line through the new wilds counts.

Bankroll Tips for Wild Toro

  • There are no free spins or bonus buys; value comes from Toro sequences and the Matador Respin Challenge.
  • The 2,250x cap means a A$1 stake can return at most A$2,250 from one round.
  • Expect many spins where matadors block lines without a Toro to clear them.
  • Choose a stake that covers at least 200 spins of your session budget.
  • Set deposit, loss and time limits before you start.

Demo Play vs Real Money

ELK Studios offers an official demo of Wild Toro on its website, which we used for the screenshots on this page, but it does not load for players in Australia. Where it is available it uses the same rules as the real game, with a fixed demo balance. Real-money stake limits and RTP configuration are set per casino.

Responsible Gaming Note

Final Verdict

Wild Toro replaces free spins with a respin system built on two symbols: a walking Toro wild on reel 5 and matadors that block lines until Toro turns them into wilds. With a 96.4% RTP, 178 connecting paylines and a 2,250x cap, it is a mid-range ELK title whose results depend on Toro arriving while matadors are on screen. Check the RTP in your casino’s version and set limits before you play.
