Mines Casino Game: Probabilities, Multipliers and Risk
Mines is an instant game played on a 5×5 grid of 25 tiles. Before the round you choose how many mines to hide (commonly 1 to 24). You then reveal tiles one at a time. Each safe tile increases your multiplier, and you can cash out after any safe pick. Reveal a mine and the stake is lost. Because the number of mines and tiles is known, the exact probability of every outcome can be calculated, which makes Mines one of the most transparent casino games.

The Probability Formula
With m mines and k safe picks in a row, the probability of surviving is:
P = C(25 – m, k) / C(25, k)
In plain terms: for each pick, divide the remaining safe tiles by the remaining tiles, and multiply the results. With 3 mines, the chance of 3 safe picks is 22/25 x 21/24 x 20/23 = 66.96%.
A fair multiplier would be 1 / P. The game pays slightly less: multiplier = RTP / P. At 97% RTP and P = 66.96%, the payout is 0.97 / 0.6696 = 1.45x.

Odds and Multipliers With 3 Mines
| Safe picks | Chance of surviving | Fair multiplier | At 97% RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 88.00% | 1.14x | 1.10x |
| 2 | 77.00% | 1.30x | 1.26x |
| 3 | 66.96% | 1.49x | 1.45x |
| 5 | 49.57% | 2.02x | 1.96x |
| 10 | 19.78% | 5.05x | 4.90x |
| 15 | 5.22% | 19.17x | 18.6x |
| 22 (all safe tiles) | 0.043% (1 in 2,300) | 2,300x | 2,231x |
The multipliers in a real game may differ slightly depending on the provider’s rounding and RTP. The structure is the same.
Odds With 1 and 5 Mines
| Mines | Safe picks | Chance of surviving | At 97% RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 96.00% | 1.01x |
| 1 | 12 | 52.00% | 1.87x |
| 1 | 24 | 4.00% | 24.25x |
| 5 | 1 | 80.00% | 1.21x |
| 5 | 3 | 49.57% | 1.96x |
| 5 | 5 | 29.18% | 3.32x |
| 5 | 10 | 5.65% | 17.16x |
| 24 | 1 | 4.00% | 24.25x |
Note the symmetry: 3 mines with 5 picks has the same probability as 5 mines with 3 picks (49.57%). Both pay about 1.96x at 97%. Many setups lead to the same risk-reward point; the choice of mines and picks only changes how you get there.
Why Every Cash-Out Point Has the Same Edge
Since the payout at every step is RTP / P, the expected return of stopping after any number of picks is P x (RTP / P) = RTP. Stopping after 1 pick or 10 picks, with 1 mine or 20, returns 97% on average in a 97% game. No combination of mine count and cash-out point beats the house edge. This is the same principle as cash-out targets in crash games.
Common Misconceptions
- “Corners are safer.” Mine positions are uniformly random. Every unrevealed tile has the same chance of being a mine.
- “The last round had mines on the left, so go right.” Each round is generated independently.
- “After several safe picks, the next is safer.” The opposite: as safe tiles are used up, the share of mines among the remaining tiles rises. With 3 mines, the first pick is safe 88% of the time; the 11th pick (after 10 safe ones) is safe only 12/15 = 80% of the time.
- “Predictor bots can see the grid.” Provably fair Mines commits to the mine layout via a hashed server seed. Tools selling predictions are scams.
Provably Fair Verification
In provably fair Mines, the layout is generated from a server seed (shown as a hash before play), your client seed and a nonce. After rotating seeds, you can recompute the layout of past rounds and confirm it matches. See provably fair for how hashing works.
Speed, Turnover and Limits
A Mines round can take a few seconds, and auto modes let you pre-select tiles and replay the same pattern. At A$1 per round and 10 rounds a minute, that is A$600 of turnover per hour and about A$18 of expected loss at 97% RTP. High-mine settings swing much more than that figure suggests. Set a loss limit and a round count before starting; our bankroll management guide has templates.
Practical Notes
- Read the RTP in the info panel and compare the first-pick multiplier with the fair value (for 3 mines, fair is 1.14x).
- Choose a fixed mines count and cash-out point before the session.
- Treat 20+ mines as a lottery-style bet: a 1 in 25 chance or less.
- Check bonus terms; Mines is often excluded from wagering. See game weighting.
Mines is offered by instant-game studios including Spribe and is common at crypto casinos.
Frequently Asked Questions
You choose how many mines to hide on a 5×5 grid of 25 tiles, usually from 1 to 24, then reveal tiles one at a time. Each safe tile raises the multiplier. You can cash out after any safe pick; if you reveal a mine, the round ends and the stake is lost.
It equals safe tiles divided by 25. With 1 mine it is 96%, with 3 mines 88%, with 5 mines 80%, and with 24 mines 4%.
No. Mine positions are randomly generated for each round, usually through a provably fair process. Corners, edges and the centre are equally likely to hold a mine, and previous rounds tell you nothing about the next.
It depends on the provider. Spribe’s Mines is commonly listed at about 97%, and some crypto-casino versions use a 1% house edge. The multiplier table in the game shows the payout for each pick, and the info panel states the RTP.
More mines mean a lower chance per pick and higher multipliers. The house edge stays the same. What changes is variance: with 24 mines you have a 1 in 25 chance of winning about 24x; with 1 mine you almost always win a tiny amount on the first pick.
