Sports Betting vs Casino Games: Margins, Law and Combined Accounts
Many offshore sites combine a casino and a sportsbook in one account, and many Australians use both a local bookmaker and an offshore casino. The two products are priced and regulated very differently. This page compares the costs in numbers, explains what Australian law allows for each, and lists practical points for using a combined account. It is part of our casino tips and strategy section.
The Legal Position in Australia
| Product | Online from Australia | Who regulates |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-match sports betting with an Australian-licensed bookmaker | Permitted | State and territory regulators; ACMA for the Interactive Gambling Act |
| In-play (live) sports betting online | Prohibited for online services; licensed bookmakers offer it by phone | Interactive Gambling Act 2001 |
| Online casino games and pokies | Prohibited to offer to people in Australia | ACMA enforces; offshore sites are blocked |
| Offshore sportsbooks without an Australian licence | Prohibited to offer to people in Australia | ACMA enforces |
Two consequences for players. First, an offshore casino-sportsbook has no Australian licence for either product, so Australian consumer protections do not apply. Second, BetStop, the national self-exclusion register, covers licensed Australian wagering providers only; registering does not block offshore sites. See is online gambling legal in Australia and BetStop. Since June 2024, licensed Australian wagering providers also cannot accept credit cards or digital currency.
House Edge vs Bookmaker Margin
Casino games have a fixed edge. A bookmaker builds a margin (overround) into the odds. Convert the odds to implied probabilities and add them up; the excess over 100% is the margin. Details are in understanding odds.
| Bet | Typical cost to the player |
|---|---|
| Baccarat Banker | 1.06% |
| European roulette | 2.70% |
| Head-to-head market at 1.90 / 1.90 | About 5% |
| Online pokie at 96% RTP | 4% |
| Three-way soccer market at 2.50 / 3.30 / 2.90 | About 4.6% |
| Four-leg multi, about 5% margin per leg | About 18.5% |

Why Multis Cost So Much
A multi (accumulator) multiplies the odds of each leg, and it also multiplies the margins. If each leg returns about 95% of fair value, the multi returns:
| Legs | Return vs fair value | Effective margin |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 95.0% | 5.0% |
| 2 | 90.3% | 9.8% |
| 4 | 81.5% | 18.5% |
| 6 | 73.5% | 26.5% |
Same-game multis often carry higher margins per leg than single markets. A six-leg multi is, on these numbers, more expensive than a baccarat Tie bet (14.36%).
Where Skill Fits
Casino probabilities are fixed: no knowledge changes the odds of a roulette spin. In sports betting, the bookmaker’s price is an estimate, and a bettor who estimates probabilities more accurately than the market can, in principle, find positive-value bets. In practice, margins, limits on winning accounts and efficient markets make this hard to sustain. The useful takeaway is the reverse: if you bet on sport for entertainment, stick to singles on major markets, where margins are lowest.
Using a Combined Casino and Sportsbook Account
- Separate bonuses. Casino and sports welcome offers are usually separate and often mutually exclusive. Read which one you are claiming at deposit.
- Wagering rules differ. Sports bonuses usually require minimum odds per bet (commonly 1.50 to 2.00) and may exclude system bets or cash-outs. Casino bonuses use game weighting.
- One wallet, one limit. Deposit limits often cover both products, but some sites set separate sports and casino limits. Check both.
- Shifting losses. A common pattern is moving money from a sports win into the casino. Decide in advance whether winnings from one product can be used in the other.
- Bet settlement disputes. Sportsbook terms include rules on void markets, palpable errors (obviously wrong prices) and retirement in tennis. Read them before betting larger amounts.
Sites that offer both are compared in casino and sportsbook sites. RocketPlay, for example, runs a sportsbook alongside its casino; see the RocketPlay review.
Cash-Out and Bonus Bets
Two sportsbook features have costs that are easy to miss:
- Cash-out. The cash-out offer on an open bet is calculated from current odds with a margin built in, so taking it usually returns less than the bet’s fair value at that moment. Frequent cash-outs add a second margin to every bet.
- Bonus bets. A A$50 bonus bet usually returns only the winnings, not the A$50 stake. At odds of 2.00 a win pays A$50; at 1.50 it pays A$25. Bonus bets are therefore worth considerably less than their face value, and more at longer odds.
Casino equivalents are covered in the house edge guide and the wagering requirements guide.
Budgeting Across Both
Set one gambling budget that covers both sports and casino play rather than separate budgets that add up to more than you can afford. Track them in the same log. Use the expected-cost approach for both: casino turnover x house edge, sports turnover x margin. A A$50 weekly multi habit at an 18.5% effective margin costs about A$9.25 a week on average, about A$480 a year.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pre-match betting with an Australian-licensed bookmaker is legal. Online in-play betting is prohibited, and licensed bookmakers offer live betting by phone instead.
Not always. A typical single bet carries a margin of about 5%, higher than baccarat Banker or European roulette. Multis are much more expensive because margins compound.
BetStop covers licensed Australian online and phone wagering providers. Offshore casinos and sportsbooks are not part of it.
Usually not. Sites normally offer separate casino and sports bonuses with different wagering rules, and you choose one at deposit.
The bookmaker’s margin applies to every leg and compounds. Four legs at about 5% each return around 81.5% of fair value, an effective margin of about 18.5%.
