How to File a Gambling Complaint in Australia

Where you complain depends on who you gambled with. An Australian-licensed betting site answers to an Australian regulator. An offshore casino answers only to its overseas licensing body and the dispute resolution service it names. A scam site answers to no one, so the response shifts to your bank and the scam-reporting agencies.

This page gives the correct route for each case, the evidence to collect, a template you can adapt, and realistic expectations for each step.

Choose the Right Route

Step 1: Collect Evidence Before You Complain

  • Account username, registered email and customer ID.
  • Date, amount and transaction ID of every deposit and withdrawal involved.
  • Screenshots of your balance and bet or game history, with the date visible.
  • Copies of all chat transcripts and emails. Request a chat transcript by email at the end of each conversation.
  • The terms and conditions and bonus terms as they stood when you played. Save them as PDF; terms change.
  • Verification documents you supplied and the dates you supplied them.
  • Any message in which the casino explains its decision, including the clause number it relies on.

Step 2: Use the Operator’s Formal Procedure

Live chat is not a formal complaint. Find the complaints clause in the terms and follow it: usually an email to a named address with a specified subject line. Most offshore terms state a response period, often 24 hours for acknowledgement and a longer period for a decision.

Template you can adapt:

Subject: Formal complaint, account [ID], withdrawal [transaction ID]
I am lodging a formal complaint under clause [number] of your terms. On [date] I requested a withdrawal of A$[amount] via [method]. On [date] you [declined / delayed / voided] it, citing [reason]. I dispute this because [facts, with clause references]. My account was verified on [date]. Please reverse the decision and process the withdrawal within [number] days, or provide the specific clause and evidence relied on. If unresolved, I will refer this matter to [ADR provider / regulator].

Keep the tone factual. Quote clause numbers. Do not threaten chargebacks while the dispute is open; it can lead to account closure.

Step 3: Escalate to the Correct Body

Australian-licensed betting sites

Complain to the regulator that issued the provider’s licence (most national bookmakers are licensed in the Northern Territory; others in states such as New South Wales or Victoria). The provider’s licence details are shown on its website and on ACMA’s register of licensed wagering providers. BetStop and credit-ban breaches go to ACMA.

Independent complaint portals run by casino review websites also mediate disputes. They have no legal power, but operators that value their ratings often respond.

Payments

If you paid by card, ask your bank about a dispute under the card scheme rules. Time limits apply, often around 120 days from the transaction, depending on the scheme and reason. Crypto transfers cannot be reversed by anyone. Our guide to withdrawing winnings explains how payment method choice affects your options before a dispute arises.

What to Expect

RouteTypical outcome
Operator’s formal procedureResolves most verification delays and many bonus disputes
ADR providerWritten decision; operators licensed under ADR regimes are expected to follow it
Overseas regulatorCan investigate and sanction the licensee; may not order individual payment
ACMAInvestigates the operator; does not recover money for players
Bank or card disputePossible refund for card payments within time limits

Avoid These Mistakes

  • Opening a second account while the dispute is open: duplicate accounts are a common reason for voiding winnings.
  • Paying anyone who offers to “recover” funds; see how to spot a scam casino.
  • Continuing to play the disputed balance.
  • Deleting chat history or emails.

If the dispute is causing stress or you are chasing losses, consider a break; our cooling-off guide explains the options.

Official forms: ACMA online gambling services.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. ACMA investigates and acts against illegal operators but does not recover money for players. ACMA states that Australians using illegal services are not protected by Australian law.

First to the provider’s complaints team, then to the state or territory regulator that issued its licence. Complaints about BetStop breaches or offers of credit go to ACMA.

Follow the casino’s formal complaints procedure in writing, then escalate to the ADR provider it names or to its licensing body, such as the Curaçao Gaming Authority or the Tobique Gaming Commission.

Card payments can sometimes be disputed under card scheme rules within time limits. Bank transfers are harder to recover, and crypto transfers cannot be reversed.
