Casino Bonus Red Flags
A bonus is priced by its terms, not its headline. Most disputes between players and offshore casinos involve a bonus clause the player had not read: a win cap, a max bet breach or an “irregular play” rule. Because offshore casinos are not licensed in Australia, the ACMA cannot recover money for you if a site withholds winnings (ACMA guidance), so spotting these terms before you deposit is the main protection available.
Below are 14 clauses to look for, with examples recorded in our casino reviews. This page is part of our bonus guides.
Terms That Limit What You Can Win
1. Win caps on deposit bonuses
Caps are normal on no deposit offers, but on deposit bonuses they cut the upside of your own money. Wild Tornado caps match-bonus winnings at 10x the bonus; Richard Casino and Slots Gallery also use 10x caps. Uptown Pokies caps winnings on deposit bonuses above 100% at 15x the deposit: a A$100 deposit with a 250% bonus can pay at most A$1,500. King Billy’s bonus max-win limits are recorded in our King Billy review as a point flagged by Casino.guru.
2. Caps that extend beyond the bonus
Check whether the cap applies only to bonus winnings or to “all winnings while a bonus is active”. The second version can capture wins from your next real-money deposit.
3. Instalment payouts
RocketPlay may split wins over A$20,000 into monthly instalments, and many casinos have similar rules. Combined with low weekly limits, a large bonus win can take months to receive. See withdrawal limits.
Terms That Make Wagering Harder
4. Deposit plus bonus wagering
30x D+B is 60x the bonus on a 100% match. Ignition, Fair Go, Cosmobet, Rabona and others use D+B. See wagering requirements for the conversion.
5. Very short expiry
Casinonic gives three days to clear 50x; Wild Tornado three days for 40x; DundeeSlots three days for 50x. A A$100 bonus at 50x is A$5,000 of turnover, 2,500 spins at A$2 in 72 hours.
6. Very low max bet
7Bit’s A$2 limit is clear and stated, but combined with a short expiry it can make wagering unrealistic. Vague limits (“bets considered disproportionate”) are worse because they can be applied after the fact. See max bet rule.
7. Wagering not stated
Our reviews of Ricky Casino and Wild Fortune record that wagering for parts of the welcome package is not shown on the promotions page. If the multiplier is not in writing, you cannot calculate the cost.
8. Deposit turnover rules
HellSpin, Woo, Rooli, Golden Crown, DundeeSlots and King Billy require deposits to be wagered 3x before withdrawal; 7Bit applies 10x for table and live games. This applies even if you decline the bonus, so it is a general withdrawal condition rather than a bonus term.

Terms About Payments and Accounts
9. Excluded deposit methods
Casinoly and MrPunter exclude Skrill and Neteller deposits from the welcome bonus; PlayAmo excludes crypto deposits from deposit bonuses. Depositing with an excluded method and then claiming the bonus can void it.
10. Dormancy and admin fees
RocketPlay charges a A$25 (EUR 25 equivalent) monthly fee after 12 months of inactivity, and Woo charges €25. Fees can consume small balances, including unfinished bonus balances.
11. Verification only at withdrawal
Casinos that verify identity only when you request a payout can delay or refuse it after you have played through a bonus. Complete KYC verification early.
Discretion and Conduct Clauses
12. “Irregular play” or “bonus abuse” defined loosely
Clauses that let the casino void winnings for “any betting pattern it considers irregular” without examples give the operator wide discretion. Reasonable terms list specific behaviours: low-risk betting on both sides of roulette, switching to low-weighted games, or delaying bonus rounds until wagering is finished.
13. Changes without notice
“Terms may be changed at any time without notice” combined with no version date makes it hard to prove what applied when you claimed. Save a copy of the terms on the day.
14. Penalties for cancelling
Cosmobet’s terms deduct the bonus, the winnings and the bets placed with it when a bonus is cancelled, according to our Cosmobet review. Standard practice is to remove only the bonus and its winnings.
What Reasonable Terms Look Like
| Term | Reasonable | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Wagering | Up to 35x bonus only, stated clearly | 50x or higher, D+B, or not stated |
| Expiry | 7 to 30 days | 3 days or less for 40x+ |
| Max bet | Stated amount, A$5–A$8 | “Disproportionate” without a figure |
| Win cap on deposit bonus | None | 10x bonus or less |
| Structure | Non-sticky | Sticky with cancellation penalties |
| Discretion | Specific prohibited behaviours listed | “At our sole discretion” without examples |

Frequently Asked Questions
A win cap on a deposit bonus, especially 10x the bonus or less, because it limits the upside of your own deposit.
It is high. At 96% RTP, 50x bonus-only wagering has an expected loss of twice the bonus, and with a three-day expiry it is often impractical.
Casinos cite past bonus abuse through e-wallets. Whatever the reason, depositing with an excluded method can void the bonus, so check before paying.
Terms usually say they can change, but the version in force when you claimed should apply. Keep a dated copy.
Start with the casino’s complaints process, then the licensing body named in its footer. The ACMA states it cannot help recover winnings withheld by illegal offshore operators.
