Casino Cashback Bonuses Explained
A cashback bonus returns a percentage of your losses over a set period. Unlike a match bonus it is paid after you play, so it does not add balance up front. Its value depends on four terms: the percentage, how “loss” is defined, the wagering on the cashback and the cap.
This guide works through each one with A$ figures and belongs to our bonus guides.
How Net Loss Is Calculated
Most casinos define the base as net losses: deposits minus withdrawals minus current balance for the period, or real-money bets minus real-money wins. Typical exclusions:
- Bets made with bonus money do not count.
- Periods in which you claimed a deposit bonus may be excluded.
- Some cashback applies to one category only, for example live casino or slots.
- Pending withdrawals may be treated as balance.
Example: you deposit A$600 in a week, withdraw A$100 and end with A$0. Net loss = A$600 – A$100 – A$0 = A$500. At 10% cashback you receive A$50.

Why Wagering on Cashback Matters
Take A$50 cashback (10% of a A$500 net loss) on 96% RTP pokies:
| Wagering | Turnover | Expected loss | Expected cash value |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | A$0 | A$0 | A$50.00 |
| 1x | A$50 | A$2.00 | A$48.00 |
| 5x | A$250 | A$10.00 | A$40.00 |
| 20x | A$1,000 | A$40.00 | A$10.00 |
| 35x | A$1,750 | A$70.00 | A$0 (balance usually lost first) |
At 35x the cashback is effectively a bonus with standard wagering. At 1x–5x it is close to cash. When comparing two offers, the lower-wagering one at a smaller percentage can be worth more: 5% with no wagering (A$25 cash) beats 10% at 20x (about A$10 expected).

Cashback as a Percentage of Turnover vs Losses
Some programs pay a percentage of bets placed rather than losses. This is usually called rakeback and is common at crypto casinos. Playfina lists weekly rakeback alongside monthly cashback, and DegenCity combines VIP rakeback with cashback. CristalPoker uses a points model: 1 point per A$32 wagered, 25 points convert to A$1.60. That equals A$1.60 per A$800 wagered, or 0.2% of turnover. On a 96% RTP game the expected loss on A$800 is A$32, so the return is 5% of expected losses. See loyalty points for the conversion maths.
Daily, Weekly or Monthly?
- Daily cashback (Spinsy, Rabona) smooths results: a losing day is partly refunded even if the week ends ahead.
- Weekly cashback (7Bit, RocketPlay, King Billy) nets wins and losses across seven days, so a winning Friday cancels a losing Tuesday.
- Monthly cashback is less common and usually tied to VIP status.
For the same rate, daily calculation pays out at least as much as weekly, because losing days are never offset by winning days.
Live Casino Cashback
Live-only cashback such as Mafia Casino’s 25% at 1x is relevant because live tables usually count 0%–10% towards normal bonus wagering. If you play live blackjack or roulette, a live cashback is often the only promotion that applies to your game. Compare it with the house edge: European roulette has a 2.70% edge, so A$1,000 of bets loses A$27 on average, and 25% back reduces that to about A$20.25. Our roulette odds guide has the edges for each bet.
Cashback vs a Reload Bonus
A reload adds money before you play; cashback refunds part of what you lost after. With a A$100 deposit, a 50% reload at 40x gives A$50 of bonus and A$2,000 of turnover with an expected loss of A$80. Cashback of 10% at 1x on the same A$100, if lost, returns A$10 with an expected loss of A$0.40 while wagering it. The reload gives a longer session; the cashback gives a smaller but nearly certain return on a losing week. Compare both on our reload bonus page.
How to Claim Cashback
- Check whether cashback is automatic or must be requested (Fair Go requires contacting support).
- Do not hold an active deposit bonus during the period if the terms exclude bonus play.
- Note the payout day: RocketPlay and King Billy pay on Thursdays.
- Check the expiry on credited cashback, often 24 hours to 7 days before it lapses.
- Complete the wagering, if any, on eligible games.
Cashback and Responsible Play
Cashback reduces losses but does not reverse them. 10% back on a A$500 loss still leaves a A$450 loss. Do not raise your deposits to reach a higher VIP cashback tier; the extra expected loss is larger than the extra cashback. Use deposit and loss limits regardless of promotions.
